Event Description

During the month of September WGR members donated products for our Period Product Drive, inspired by a donation drive held this spring by Rep. Grace Meng which highlighted “period poverty” and the impact of the unaddressed natural need of menstrual hygiene products. Donations were given to the Greater DC Diaper Bank and St. Paul’s Food Pantry.

Most of us probably do not experience any challenges when spending the necessary money for menstrual hygiene products. We also have the luxury of preferred brands and the ability to buy them at our convenience. This is not the case for low-income workers and homeless women. Studies have demonstrated a direct correlation between access to menstrual supplies and increased attendance and academic performance.  Lack of affordable or regular access to period products is a significant cause of missed school days.  Low-income workers and homeless women also struggle to afford the supplies they need to manage their periods with dignity.

We had asked WGR members to bring a period product donation to any WGR event they attended during the month of September.  You answered the call and we donated 3423 packages of period products to the Greater DC Diaper Bank and St. Paul’s Food Pantry.  If you did not participate but would like to, please bring a period product to this event.

Participants will hear about:

  • Challenges faced by low-income workers and homeless women;
  • Impact on increased attendance and academic performance;
  • Significance of Menstrual Equity for All;
  • How you can continue to support regular access to period products for women who struggle and;
  • Summarize the key takeaways from the event and share this information with your network.

This event will provide helpful information for government relations professionals at all levels.
